I had my eye on a jacket at a Zara sister-store which doesn’t take international credit cards, so I would need a company to place the order for me. After scouting around and reading a few reviews, I signed up to Forward2Me in hopes that the jacket would go on sale on Boxing Day.
On December 26, Forward2Me tweeted "Boxing Day Sales are here! Shop online today so you don't miss out!” The jacket I wanted was half price. I hastily filled out a form for a ‘Personal Shopper’ purchase – the Zara store didn’t take international credit cards. I didn't receive a confirmation screen or an email or anything. I wasn't sure what was supposed to happen next. The next day, my order still hadn't been placed, and the jacket I wanted was rapidly selling out. I didn’t know what to do – if I placed the order with another company, I might end up accidentally buying two expensive jackets that may prove costly or complicated to return.
I filled out Forward2Me's online contact form, but didn't hear back. On the morning of the 27th I went to their Facebook page and posted a message on their wall. 10 hours later, I had a reply on the Facebook wall (but not to my email) stating that they were closed on Boxing Day (Friday) and the two days of the weekend! I couldn’t believe there was no one manning the office during the biggest sale period of the year. They did promise they would try to find someone to place the order.
Long story short, I finally heard back just before 4am (Australian time) on the 28th from the manager, Janet, assuring me that the order had been rushed through and that next public holiday they would handle staffing differently to accommodate those who need to use the ‘personal shopper’ service during sale periods. I think that would also eliminate the problem of slow response time to emails. (I had to email again a few days later to see if the jacket had arrived at their end, but I think that was largely Zara’s fault).
After that, everything went exceptionally well, and I was very impressed. I know there are a few comments from users complaining that they’re paying very high postage rates, but as someone who uses parcel forwarding services a lot, the final bill from Forward2Me was much lower than I had expected, and I had two different options - at different price points - to choose from. If you’re just buying a t-shirt for £10, then of course it’s not going to be worth using a parcel-forwarding service, unless the t-shirt has sentimental value, or you can’t buy it in your own country and you really want it. That’s not Forward2Me’s fault. They’re offering a special service at realistic and very competitive prices, and you’re at liberty to weigh up whether you’re prepared to pay for that service.
I’m on a tight budget, but using parcel forwarding services still sometimes works out to be the most economical route. In this case, the jacket I wanted was originally quite expensive, I couldn’t have it shipped to Australia, and I couldn’t even purchase it online with an Australian credit card and have it sent to a friend in the UK. A parcel forwarder was the only option. The cost of shipping to Australia with Forward2Me was about 13% of the original price of the jacket. The jacket went on sale at half price, and the personal shopper fee was an extra £15. It was well worth it. Once all of the bills had been tallied up, I still saved 33% on the total pre-sale cost of the jacket if I had walked into the UK store and purchased it myself.
Delivery was lightning-fast. American parcel-forwarding services take much longer, unless you’re willing to pay a premium to have it within four days. I told my sister, who usually lives in London, that I was expecting a parcel from the UK and I was hoping it would arrive by the end of the week, within three working days. “You’d be lucky,” she scoffed. Well, it did come in three days. It was immaculate, and carefully packaged to conserve space without crushing the jacket. I tried it on straight out of the box, and it looked pretty great.
Minor glitches aside, the staff and manager were friendly and accommodating, and the system has obviously been finely-honed to offer you the very best services at the lowest possible prices. They are up front about all costs – there were no hidden costs at all, and no surprises. The shipping process is speedy and efficient, online tracking is accurate and easy to follow, and I understand they even ship non-perishable grocery items, which is not a service most companies offer.
All in all, for a small British business, Forward2Me compares very favourably with most of the giants in the American market, and I’ll definitely be using the service again. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Santa Claus himself uses Forward2Me next year.
