What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day is Amazon’s big summer sales event, which offers big discounts and deals on a range of items, which are only available to members of their Amazon Prime subscription service

While they offer some of the best deals on their own branded products, such as the Echo Plus (down from £109.99 to £69.99), the event covers all kinds of items, with many brands saving their biggest discounts for this huge event.

The idea is similar to that of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and Amazon see it as a way of thanking their loyal customers, it’s also one of their busiest days and allows users to get some great deals too, so everybody wins!

When is Prime Day 2019?

This year Prime Day is taking place over 48 hours for the first time ever (after 36 hours last year), across July 15th and 16th.

It all kicks off at midnight July 14th, running for 48 hours until midnight on the 16th, although some early offers have already started.

Who can take advantage of Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is only for people who are subscribed to Amazon Prime. However, you can sign up whenever you want, and best of all, if you haven’t done already, you can make use of their 30-day free trial, which you just use purely to snag your Prime Day deals and then cancel, completely free of charge.

It’s also worth knowing that you can take part if any of your family members have a Household or Family Prime account, or if you’re using a Prime membership with a student discount.

What type of Prime Day deals are available?

As you would expect, Amazon put their own products front and centre of Prime Day, but all kinds of retailers try to cash in on the event too.

Whether it’s tech, clothing, or pretty much any items you can think of, Amazon will probably have a Prime Day deal for it. Here are some of the main deals Amazon usually offer during Prime Day:

  • Gold Box Deals of the Day: These deals change every day and are among the most popular on the day. Amazon make sure to stock up on these items as they fly out of their warehouses, although on occasion they have been known to sell out completely.

  • Lightning Deals: You have to be on your toes to catch these deals, which only last for a matter of hours and can often sell out very quickly.

  • Direct Price Drops: While some deals will be for a limited time only, the majority are just straightforward price drops.

  • Coupon Deals: Lots of brands also offer their own coupon deals, where you’ll require a code to make the most of their deals, so be on the lookout for these with your favourite retailers.

What were the most popular deals of Prime Day 2018?

Last year’s Prime Day was the biggest in Amazon’s history, with just under 90 million people visiting the site over the course of the event, and with it being extended this year, we expect this number to rise even further.

Over 100 million products were sold in total and Amazon say that around 1 million of these were smart home devices such as their Amazon Echo and was one of their biggest days ever for sales of their own branded products.

Overall, the two biggest selling products worldwide were the Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote and the Amazon Echo Dot, which have both had new versions released in the last twelve months.

Other popular items included Beats Headphones and Philips Hue Lights, as well as things such as Bosch Power Tools, Micro SD Cards and more.

How do I stay on top of Prime Day deals?

Of course, you likely haven’t got the time to spend 48 hours sat in front of a screen checking Amazon every few minutes to check that new deals have come up.

Firstly, it’s a good idea to have the Amazon app downloaded onto your phone, not only does it allow you to set alerts and keep an eye on certain items, but if you’ve never used it before, you’ll actually get £10 of credit and two free audiobooks.

They also have an Amazon Assistant browser extension which you might be able to get away with using at the office, which again will give you £10 off a spend of £25 or over.

Other than that, keep your eyes on Amazon’s Twitter account to make sure you don’t miss any of the best deals!
