The self-testing revolution

Self-test kits have revolutionised the way we use our bodies’ data to find out information we can take and put into action. Whether to help us monitor our health or else use as a means of testing our DNA for any reason, self-testing kits allow us to do so in the comfort of our own homes.

Such kits have become very popular in the UK, although many British companies require a UK address for posting kits to. With forward2me, people from around the world can get hold of kits from the UK and where required, facilitate sending the kit back for the results to be processed and receiving results.

Here are two of the most popular types of self-testing kits as purchased by our international customers.

Diabetic sensor kits

Current UK guidelines advise routine self-monitoring of blood glucose for all adults with Type 1 diabetes and recommend monitoring at least 4 times per day, including before each meal and before bed. For diabetes sufferers, such monitoring can be both time consuming and laborious, especially when the traditional method of finger prick blood glucose readings is used.

Over the past few years, it is no wonder that less invasive monitoring methods have been developed. One of the methods that has emerged is sensor glucose readings, made possible by the use of digital monitors, such as the FreeStyle Libre system. This records the interstitial fluid (ISF), a thin layer of fluid that surrounds the cells of the tissues below the skin.

With the FreeStyle Libre kit, a small sensor automatically measures and continuously stores glucose readings day and night. This allows diabetes patients to not only take readings painlessly, but also to monitor glucose levels throughout the day – allowing them to see how food, activity, and insulin affect their glucose levels. With the system’s accompanying app, it is easy to get to understand the patterns of your glucose levels and therefore better manage your health.

DNA testing kits

DNA testing has become extremely popular over the last decade and self-testing kits have become readily available for many different purposes. One of the most well-publicised reasons for using a DNA testing kit or service is to investigate biological relationships – particularly for paternity testing. Other popular services include sibling DNA testing and grandparent DNA testing. DNA testing has become so advanced that conclusive answers can now be found to provide evidence of biological relationships spanning all the way to 4th cousins.

DNA test samples are usually collected using a mouth swab. If using a self-testing kit, once you have taken a swab, you would send it back by a secure postal service to a laboratory. The kits available from DNA Clinics are processed following strict protocols in the company’s UK laboratory. Once received at the laboratory, most simple DNA test results will be sent back to you within 5-7 working days.

Both of the kits described above are available to those living outside the UK via our parcel forwarding service. For more information or for a quote, please get in touch with us.
