The pre-Xmas period is always busy for tech releases and this autumn is proving to be no exception! We’ve already seen key releases from the likes of Apple and Samsung in the past month so it’s perhaps unsurprising that there are further new phone releases coming our way this month.

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

Firstly, Google is expected to reveal two high-end handsets, the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 at a special event on 4th October. Following last year’s release of the Pixel and Pixel XL, which received praise from critics, especially for its camera capabilities, there are high hopes for the new incarnations.

So what can we expect from the latest models? A teaser released by Google suggests the phones will focus on improving battery life, storage and camera quality. As a quirky feature, the Pixel 2 is expected to have a special frame embedded with sensors, which you can squeeze to launch software features or execute commands.

In terms of design and screen size, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL could be accused of lagging behind the competition. The new Pixel 2 is rumoured to come with a 5-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 screen and the Pixel 2 XL having a  6-inch, 2,880 x 1,440 display. Both new Pixel phones are set to be waterproof – a feature that was missing from the old models.

Prices for the Pixels handsets are set to start at $649 (£480) for the Pixel 2 and $849 (£630) for the XL, with both sizes having 2 storage capability options. Google are expected to have both phones available for purchase from the end of October.

Huawei Mate 10

Following the success of its Mate 9 series in 2016, Huawei is set to launch its new model, the Mate 10, later this month. As with the majority of the latest phone releases, many of the details surrounding the new Mate 10 are a closely guarded secret.

Following the release of an invitation to a company event on October 16th, we do, however, know that predict that all the details will be revealed on this date.

It has been rumoured that the new Mate series will have three version - the Mate 10 Lite, a standard mate 10 model and the Mate 10 Pro, which is expected to have a release date slightly later in the year.

In terms of design, Richard Yu, chief of Huawei’s consumer division, dropped a hint in an interview that the new model would have a ‘full screen display’. If this is to be interpreted in line with current smart phone trends, we can expect a bezel-less look, similar to the direction of the new Samsung S8. Images released on YouTube also indicate that the rear of the phone will feature a brushed metal finish as an option, with blue, black and gold also being colour options.

So what about features? According to Huawei’s CEO, the Mate 10 “will have much longer battery life, a full-screen display, much faster-charging speed, much better camera and photographic capability, as well as much better overall user experience” than the iPhone 8. Huawei’s new flagship phone series will also come with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, along with being IP67 rated.

Although not all of the above details are confirmed, they are some pretty good guesses. One thing’s for sure, the smartphone market is really hotting up – which can only be a good thing for users! Don’t forget that any of the above mentioned handsets can be purchased on a handset only basis for delivery in the UK and shipping to your home address. So don’t wait until the release date in your country – keep an eye on the UK release dates and get forward2me to do the legwork!
